| A Brief Introduction |
The
Sakya Ga-Dhe Hospital was established in the
year 2000 as a social undertaking of the Sakya Centre,
a monastery and registered Society. It has one of its
main aims (as mentioned in the Memorandum of Association
of the Sakya Centre) the desire to provide affordable
health care to the local community.
While under the umbrella of the Sakya Centre, Sakya
Ga-Dhe Hospital is fully autonomous in its functioning.
In addition to the local population of Indians and
Tibetans both old and young, the monks and nuns of
the Sakya Centre too are treated extensively at the
hospital: all of them are charged a very nominal fee.

| Mission Statement of the Hospital |
| |
Keeping in mind the
fine pledges in the Tibetan Delek Hospital mission statement,
we at Sakya Ga-Dhe Hospital have borrowed from its goodness
in order to frame our own. We feel that having such
a mission statement will direct us towards a higher,
more selfless goal for the greater good by serving as
a guiding principle for us as we serve the community.
"We
at the Sakya Ga-Dhe Hospital aim to provide affordable
healthcare to the best of our abilities and resources,
to each and everyone who approaches us regardless of
their race, or religion, their social or financial status."
Staff members should bear this mission
statement in mind everyday of their work at the hospital,
and let it become a part of their work ethic to look
past social barriers and instead incorporate politeness,
respect, patience and compassion into their service.
It is imperative that staff members take this mission
statement to heart while they are at work.

| Our Staff |
| |
Currently we have 8 doctors, 5
nurses, 1 X-ray technician, 1 security guard, and 1
cleaner. Of these doctors, one is a Tibetan Herbal medicine
doctor, one is a gynaecologist, one a resident night
doctor, and one a dentist. All these doctors except
for one come in for 1-2 hours during the day since they
have private practices elsewhere. We also have a Pharmacy
being run by a private chemist, and a Pathology Collection
Center where collections are tested at a private Pathology
Lab. |

| Our Humble Activities |
| |
| 2004 |
• |
In 2004, Sakya
Ga-Dhe Hospital treated 8188 patients in the outpatient
department, and looked after 175 admitted patients. |
|

On August 22nd, the Hospital
organized a Polio Drop Drive where children were
given 2 drops of the Oral Polio Vaccine. Since
this is a Government of India project, we asked
for free posters and banners to advertise this
and also asked for the drops. Over 100 young children
came to our hospital to receive these medicines.
The children were also given some candy / snacks. |

On October 10th, the Hospital
organized a Free Dental Check-up and Awareness
Program. This program was advertised by distributing
600 pamphlets in the newspaper around the Rajpur
area, and 400 pamphlets in the Hospital and elsewhere.
Despite the bad weather on this day, over 50 people
turned up. While people registered their names,
and waited for the dentist to look at their teeth,
they watched 2 educational programs on TV about
dental and oral hygiene. Our dentist lent these
videos to us and they were very interested in
these videos! The people that needed medication
were given free medicines and provided by a medicine
company. The medicines ranged from painkillers
to mouthwash. Also, people from the camp who returned
to our Hospital for their dental treatment were
given a discount. |

In December we also started
a regular 'check-up' of the 116 small monks at
the monastery. Following a list of names, every
afternoon some small monks come to the hospital
to be checked up and questioned thoroughly by
the doctor about their health and physical conditions.
Nurses clean and dress any sores they have. Baths
are given to all of them at our hospital, also
following a roster. Recently we also bought undergarments
and shoes for the monks who did not have a change
of clothing, or another pair of shoes so that
we can distribute these items after we have bathed
them at the hospital. While this 'project' has
yet to take wings in earnest, we sincerely hope
it will considering the propensities of the young
monks to gather dirt and sores! |

All of us at
Sakya Centre and Sakya Ga-Dhe Hospital are grateful
for your interest and kindness towards our progress
and our needs. I urge you to please spread the
word about our small Hospital to everyone who
might be interested. If you wish to donate, any
amount of money will help when converted to Indian
Rupees, any piece of clothing will keep a poor
person warm in the winter, and any article or
item I will be sure to find a use for. |
| |
| If you wish to donate for a specific
cause / reason, please state clearly so that I will
be able to do as you request. I also like to take
pictures so that I can show you the sponsor / donor,
so please give your address also. Click here to
find out what items
we can use, and examples of where you might wish
to contribute! |
| |
| Some
examples of items we could use: |
| |
Medical
Items: Digital Thermometers, Digital
Blood Pressure Machines.
Non Medical Items:
Electric head shavers (because small
monks have many fungal head infections spread
through use of common razors), Educational Videos
(to show the public for awareness on health etc.),
Portable Media Equipment (to show videos and programs
in our hospital and in surrounding areas during
health camps), Polaroid Camera (for taking immediate
photos: not urgent, but might be useful!).
Note: we
welcome used and second-hand articles (if they
are in useable condition!!!)
|
| |
| Some
examples of where you might wish to contribute: |
| |
|
| Vaccinations:
Helping us to provide vaccinations to monks, nuns or
students, disabled children etc.
Free Health Camps:
Sponsoring a health camp for elderly citizens (might
include providing a free blood pressure check, blood
sugar check, and E.C.G.), or a dental camp for disabled
children etc.
General Hospital expenses:
Helping to pay for doctor salaries, renovations, water
and electricity bills etc.
Medical Assistance: Helping
to pay for the expensive medical treatments of patients
who are unable to afford it.
Sangha Medical Expenses:
Helping to pay for the Sangha medical expenses so that
we can continue providing free medical treatment to
all of them. Likewise, you could help to pay for occasional
physical examinations we organize for the Sangha (this
would help pay for doctor fees, blood tests, etc.)
|
| Lastly, I wish to thank each and every one of you for
taking the time to read this and for helping make a difference,
however small, in someone's life. I consider us to still
be a 'fledgling' organization, so we need all the help
and expertise there is! |

Thank you and best wishes,
